Recent activity in some nations indicates crimials may be hacking Viners.
Criminals have been doing this on Facebook for quite some time.
You do not need to do everything here, but each of the following will make it harder for criminals to break in.
You need to use safe passwords that are hard to guess. For example, there are about 1 million words. A 'botnet' can try about 100 per second, so it will take about 3 hours to crack a dictionary password. Not very safe.
Adding 2 numbers and 2 special characters to any dictionary word that is over 6 characters long will increase this to about 300 billion years. Pretty safe.
Use different passwords for different things. Using the same password on Facebook, Newsvine, email, and your home PC means an attacker can access all of your information if they guess just one password.
If do not use Linux, then you should upgrade if you are using an older operating system. Don't switch to something that is less familiar unless you have to.
- Windows 7 - Enterprise/Ultimate or higher
- Mac OS X 10.6 or higher (Apple logo --> About this Mac to check)
Make 3 accounts (do not use the same passwords).
- Admin - software updates/installation only (no casual web browsing - no personal info)
- Work - no administrator privileges - casual web browsing is OK - no personal information
- User - no administrator privileges - no casual web browsing is OK - personal information OK
Write down the user names, and passwords so that you won't loose or forget them.
The admin and work account should have no personal information.
The work and user accounts need to be limited so that any applications installed in the workand user folder cannnot be executed (only the admin account should be able to do that).
Linux, Windows 8, and OS X include the ability to encrypt directories and devices.
Ads can be used to break in.
The first thing to do is to install a firewall. PCs should never be connected directly to the Internet. The most common kind of firewall is Network Address Translation (NAT) that allows multiple PCs to share one public IP address.
You can increase security by using scanners to identify and eliminate vulnerabilities, although the firewall will block most attacks.
You enter the IP address range from your DHCP server into Nessus. It may take a few hours to complete the scan.
